The excitement of an aviation lifetime—that is the only way to describe our encounter with the legendary Martin “Hawaii” Mars. Our crew was in Canada for the Abbotsford International Airshow, already producing a project filled with highlights, from the Snowbirds to the A-10 and F-22 Raptor. At the same time, we knew the Hawaii Mars was approaching its final flight, though weather and mechanical uncertainties made the timing unpredictable. Only once we arrived in Canada did a series of emails from the Coulson team confirm what felt too good to believe: a dedicated photomission would take place on Saturday, the day after we finished our Abbotsford work. Even better—the weather forecast was perfect.
On Saturday morning we flew to Port Alberni, home of Coulson’s firefighting operations, circling Sproat Lake for a first glimpse of the giant flying boat shimmering in golden light. Photographers had gathered outside the seaport, but none were permitted in—except us, welcomed directly by the Coulson team. The surprises continued when we were invited to join the very last high-speed taxi run, a privilege as remarkable as the photoflight itself. Standing beside the aircraft, its 747-sized wingspan towering above us, brought home the significance of what we were about to witness.
After the briefing, the anticipation grew. As promised, we heard the unmistakable roar of the four radial engines coming to life—a sound none of us will forget. The photomission that followed was pure aviation magic, like stepping into an adventure film. Keeping the vast flying boat in formation with the Skyvan was challenging, but both crews worked seamlessly to make it happen. Every moment seemed to top the last: dramatic mountain backdrops, snow-capped peaks, and golden sunset light washing over the aircraft. Even as daylight faded, the Hawaii Mars treated us to one final spectacle—touching the water, then lifting off once more before heading into history.
In our long list of “once in a lifetime” moments—Vimy, Vulcan, Canberra, Starfighter—this flight stands above them all. It was truly extraordinary.
