Swedish Air Force Historic Flight 2018

piemagsapc8257-227

Aviation PhotoCrew's third project on the Scandinavian tour was set to be a real challenge: one single day available for all air-to-air photomissions, and the weather forecast shifting by the hour. After departing the Danish Air Force Airshow, the Skyvan ferried across to Trollhättan Airport in Sweden under low cloud, rain, and challenging conditions—while our ground team experienced equally unflyable weather on the drive north.

The transformation the following morning felt almost unreal. Clear blue skies, superb visibility and bright sunlight created the perfect backdrop for what would become one of the most memorable aviation photo days we have ever flown.

The objective was ambitious: to photograph the full lineup of aircraft from the Swedish Air Force Historic Flight, an extraordinary collection of classic Saab designs. The reality exceeded every expectation. With the support of Stellan Andersson and his team, we completed four separate photoflights, capturing these legendary Swedish machines in spectacular light against equally stunning Scandinavian scenery.

The Swedish Air Force joined two of the sorties, bringing their aircraft into formation with the Tunnan and the two Lansen—an incredibly rare sight. And where else in the world could you witness, in a single day, two Saab Drakens and two Saab Viggens flying air-to-air? The final flight of the day featured the Bulldog and Harvard, both part of the Historic Flight, glowing beautifully in warm afternoon light.

This gallery showcases the full story of that remarkable day: classic Swedish aircraft, perfect weather, and one unforgettable adventure in the skies over Sweden. Plans were already being made to return for the next season.
