About this gallery

Airpower is Austria's largest airshow and one of the biggest military aviation events in Europe. Staged at Zeltweg's Hinterstoisser Air Base in Styria, the ninth Airpower drew more than 200 aircraft from over 20 countries and 185,000 spectators, organised by the Austrian Armed Forces together with Red Bull and the Province of Styria.

For this shoot, Aviation PhotoCrew teamed up with the Airpower Zeltweg organisation for the first time. Staging from Trieben Airfield — and with the Pink Skyvan's chief pilot being Austrian — we flew our air-to-air join-ups through the finest airspace we've ever worked, heading north between the Northern Styrian Alps and framing aircraft against backdrops like the Grimming, still dusted with September snow. Over three full days the weather rewarded us, scattering beautiful cloud between the peaks.

Red Bull's historic fleet formed up over its home turf, while Austrian photographer Dietmar Schreiber brought in vintage aircraft from Austria, Switzerland and Germany — a Hawker Hurricane, F4U Corsair, B-25 Mitchell, T-28 Trojan and Focke-Wulf Fw 190 among them, with a de Havilland Rapide as our oldest join-up and a Fouga Magister tucked alongside a Eurofighter Typhoon. Spain's Patrulla Águila closed the sequence with a missing-man formation tribute.
