Two U.S. Air Force Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fifth‑generation stealth multirole fighters fly in close formation during an air‑to‑air display at U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) Days 2023. The F-35 is a single‑seat, conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant powered by a Pratt & Whitney F135‑PW‑100 afterburning turbofan engine, designed for air superiority, precision strike, reconnaissance and electronic warfare. The jets produce visible vapour trails under aerodynamic load as they manoeuvre.
